Extra! Extra! Edward Gorey Invents Emo in 1954!

A dreary young bank clerk named Fennis
Wished to foster an aura of menace;
To make people afraid
He wore gloves of grey suede
And white footgear intended for tennis.

The late great Edward Gorey wrote this little diddy in 1954 for his series of macabre limericks entitled The Listing Attic. However, upon reflection some 50 years later, one can easily see that this is actually an early prediction of the rise of the emo kid: skinny black jeans, crappy job, unsuitable gloves, and of course, everyone's favorite, Converse shoes. Truly a man ahead of his time.
